Maggie Pickard's interest in art and design was piqued at the age of two or three when she was handed her first box of crayons. Maggie drew what her mom interpreted to be a human, causing her mom to declare the drawing brilliant. She showed it to the neighbors, all of whom, not wanting to hurt her feelings, agreed. In any case, Maggie basked in the glory and a lifelong love of the visual arts was born.
From zookeeper at the Crandon Park Zoo in Miami, to Visual Artist in Residence for the State of Rhode Island, from drawing and design teacher at RISD, to traffic manager in the art department of Avon Books, the list of strange and interesting jobs Maggie has held is long and diverse. She holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in English literature from Roosevelt University in Chicago and a Masters of Arts degree in counseling from Rhode Island College. She attended the Art Institute of Chicago and The American Academy of Arts.
Maggie lives in Rhinebeck, New York with her husband, Elwood Smith, Sophie, the Scottie, and three cats: Luigi, Trixie and Pickles.
